The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, in partnership with Citizens of Action of Terre Haute, will hold a Community Forum on Criminal Justice Reform, Wednesday, June 26 at 6:30 PM EST. ACLU of Indiana representatives will discuss the Campaign for Smart Justice, an unprecedented, multiyear effort to reduce the U.S. jail and prison population by 50% and to combat racial disparities in the criminal justice system, as well as the recent jail overcrowding case in Vigo County.
The ACLU of Indiana has fought in the courts for more than a decade against hazardous conditions in Vigo County Jail which have resulted in the denial of basic human needs and violations of the U.S. Constitution's protections against cruel and unusual punishments.
We are pairing litigation with advocacy work that focuses on combatting overcrowding by reducing the number of people entering jails and prisons, revising extreme laws and policies that drive extraordinarily long sentences, and expanding evidence-based opportunities for release, including for those who have not yet been convicted of a crime.
