SB 257 would mandate that certain topics be covered and others not be included in a broad range of content spanning grades 1 through 12. Among the topics that cannot be covered are racial discrimination, gender discrimination, and class struggle. This bill would require tens of thousands of Hoosier teachers to be complicit with fostering a belief in a whitewashed version of American history. It would also empower “community members” to surveil class content and seek revocation of a teacher’s license for failing to comply with the bill’s mandates.

The ACLU of Indiana opposes this bill because it is terrible education policy, dangerous public policy, and counter to the very Constitutional principles it purports to support.
