These bills would have prohibited race discrimination in housing, credit, employment, and public accommodations based on traits historically associated with race, such as hair texture, tightly curled or coiled hair, and protective hairstyles like braids, dreadlocks, and twists. Hair is a prompt that too often reveals the bigotry of people who imagine themselves to merely be upholding professional 'standards' – standards that too often treat textured hair and protective styles as unsuited for the office, classroom, and board room.
