SB 279 would have provided for in-person visits for children in juvenile detention facilities unless extraordinary circumstances prevent them, and for a minimum of two free phone calls of at least ten minutes each week.
Indiana law should ensure the rights of detained children to have contact with families through in person visitation and phone calls or virtual visit. Enacting such fundamental protections will improve outcomes by strengthening family engagement and creating more humane conditions and equitable treatment for detainees.
