SB 10 seeks to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Indiana law already ensures that only citizens vote, and there is no evidence of widespread voter registration — much less voting — by noncitizens.
Despite that, this bill would make it more difficult for Hoosiers to vote in several ways. It would remove student IDs issued by state educational institutions from the list of acceptable forms of voting identification. This will place an unnecessary and unjust burden on students who may not have another form of government ID. It would also purge eligible voters from the polls and disproportionately impact Hoosiers of color and naturalized citizens.
Indiana continues to lag in voter participation. In 2024, only seven states had lower participation than Indiana. Our elected officials need to propose bold, creative policies to increase voter participation – not continue to pass unneeded laws that decrease it further.
