INDIANAPOLIS - Multiple media sources are reporting that the Trump-Pence administration is working to dramatically rollback critical protections for transgender people by narrowing the definitions of sex and gender. These measures come at a time when the public and courts increasingly agree that transgender people should be protected from discrimination.

The ACLU of Indiana issued this statement:

"The Trump-Pence administration’s recent attack on transgender people is hateful, and it will not go unchallenged. Hoosiers have continuously spoken out against policies that confront LGBTQ individuals with challenges and discrimination. The ACLU of Indiana will fight alongside LGBTQ community members to stop these despicable plans to erase the reality and meaning of the lives of transgender and nonbinary people.

"Medical organizations around the world, including the World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association, agree that transgender people are real, that they deserve appropriate care, and that their experiences are valid. We are dedicated to doing everything we can to ensure that every person is granted equal protection under the law, and is treated with dignity."
