This bill would repeal the “aid and abet” provision of Indiana’s transgender youth healthcare ban. The aid and abet language prevents licensed Indiana providers from communicating with families or other practitioners, including out-of-state doctors, if doing so facilitates access to gender-affirming care for Hoosier minors.
As a result, Hoosier youth are receiving substandard care because members of their medical teams can’t communicate basic health care information back and forth. This can lead to medication complications and requires repetitive medical services like bloodwork.
The ACLU of Indiana is fighting for full restoration of healthcare for transgender youth. Until we win that fight, HB 1444 restores Indiana clinicians’ First Amendment rights, increases quality of care, and simplifies the already difficult process Hoosier families go through to get their children appropriate care.
